In an effort to fight the increase of rape cases by relatives Shamwari YeMwanasikana has embarked on a campaign to educate girls on rape being perpetrated by relatives.

In an interview with the organisation’s director Ekenia Chifamba said her organisation is trying by all means to create safe space for girls.

” We have managed to conduct peer to peer sessions as a way of creating a safe space for girls to open up,” Chifamba said.

“We have a project which focuses on educating children of their rights and knowing SDGs.

“We had information dissemination sessions in schools so as to address these issues with girls.”

Chifamba went on to say the battle is not easy for her organization to handle the cases alone but it need others to join so as to fight together.

“We have our community cadres within different areas of operations that attend to cases and report cases of sexual abuse to relevant authorities.

” Our cadres have attended to cases of sexual abuse by relatives and have managed to work with us and relevant authorities in ensuring the safety of the survivors.”

The organization is currently working on building a sanctuary for survivors of rape for their own safety.

“We are currently in the process of building our shelter that will serve as a safehouse for survivors of abuse and those living under threat of violence,” she said.

She added, “We have managed to utilize our Dandaro revasikana clubs as a way of raising awareness and information dissemination on rape and other related abuse issues.”

” We have equipped our beneficiaries with the right information and they know the reporting procedures in the event that they are violated.”
