The World was left in shock on Saturday as Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo’s clear stoppage time goal against Serbia during a World Cup qualifier match was disallowed.
Referee of the day Dannie Makkelie from Netherlands waved for play only to deny Ronaldo’s goal that clearly crossed the goal line.
Makkelie’s decision stood, since goal line technology was not in use during this match.
This saw the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner storming off the pitch and frustratedly removed and thrown down his arm band before final whistle
The 36-year-old action was in protest to the disallowed goal which allegedly could have been Portugal’s winner away at Red Star Stadium given that the Dutch referee had visited VAR to verify his decision.
He took to his Instagram to express his frustrations.
“Being captain of the Portugal national team is one of the greatest honours and privileges of my life, he posted, “I give and will always give my all for my country, that will never change.”
“But there are difficult moments to cope with, especially when we feel like an entire nation is being harmed. Head up and face the next challenge! Come on Portugal!”
