Due to increased cases, SA is moving to Alert *LEVEL3* with a stricter curfew and fewer people allowed at gatherings. People are asked to follow basic precautions, including compulsory masks.
Over the past 2 weeks, daily new infections have doubled, hospital admissions are 59% higher and deaths have increased by 48%. The positivity rate is rising in many provinces, particularly Gauteng. The increase is faster and steeper in Gauteng than in previous waves. Private hospitals in the province are nearing capacity.
Practice all precautions
To slow the spread we need to return to basics and change our behaviour.
Remember that many infected people do not show symptoms. You could unknowlingly pass on the infection to an elderly loved one, or someone with an underlying condition, if you aren’t careful.
If you know you have been exposed, you must isolate for 10 days, no matter how inconvenient it is.
Move to Alert Level 3
Curfew changes to 10pm to 4am. Non-essential businesses must close by 9pm.
Gatherings are limited to 50% capacity, with a maximum of 50 people indoors and 100 outdoors.
Funerals are limited to 50 people. All precautions must be observed. Night vigils and after tears parties are not allowed.
Off-site alcohol sales are only allowed Mon-Thu 10am-6pm (excluding public holidays). On-site sales are allowed as per the liquor licence up to 9pm. Drinking alcohol in public spaces is not allowed.
Masks are still compulsory.
The supply of J&J vaccines has been held up by an investigation into contamination at a source in the US.
Although 2 million J&J doses are unusable, new doses are being produced at the Aspen plant in the Eastern Cape. Additional doses are also being sent to SA.
About 1.5 million people in SA have received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
We are vaccinating about 80 000 people a day but this will increase.
About 480 000 health workers were vaccinated in Phase 1 and now far fewer health workers are being infected in the 3rd wave. (640 infections in 1 week in the 2nd wave compared to 64 in 1 week in the 3rd wave). This is evidence that vaccines do work!
Anyone over 60 should register for vaccination. Help anyone you know who is eligible to *REGISTER*.
