Poor Service Delivery Anger Harare Residents

By Zvikomborero Machirori

Harare Residents are not happy with the poor service delivery by the Harare City Council, clear indication of failure by the City Fathers.

In an interview with slymedianews, Director of the Harare Residents Trust Precious Shumba said millions of people in the city have no access to tap water and are resorting to using unsafe sources such as shallow Wells and contaminated boreholes.

Some residential suburbs have gone for years without Council water.

“Residents are quite angry because they don’t have water. People are going for 5 days without this service and this exposes them to various disease,” Shumba said.

On refuse collection and garbage management, Shumba said Council had dismally failed to ensure residential areas are clean.

“Rubbish bins are not being collected, the city is an eyesore with garbage at shopping centers and in open spaces because people have no option but to discard their rubbish in open spaces.”

He also decried the manner in which Council officials treat residents when they go seeking services.
“When residents report pipe bursts to Council officials, these are ignored and go on unresolved for months, yet Council will be losing treated water,” said Shumba.

“Instead of dealing with the problem, Council officials actually demand that they be paid by resident for them to fix the challenge. This has oiled corruption by city officials,” he added.

The Harare City Council has a vision to transform Harare into a world class city by 2025.

Analysts have said the vision remains a pipedream as service delivery continues to deteriorate each passing day.
