Motion on declaration of public holiday in honour of women
Hon Madiwa, seconded by Hon Mpariwa, moved her motion calling for the Government to declare a specific public holiday to celebrate women’s contributions and achievements in the liberation struggle and the development of Zimbabwe.
Hon. Madiwa called on the National Assembly to urge the Executive to emulate other countries in the region by declaring a specific day to celebrate and recognise women.
She highlighted that some women in rural areas were not aware of the celebration of International Women’s Day, and did not know about the Women’s Bank and the Ministry responsible for women’s affairs.
Therefore, having a day to commemorate women would result in increased awareness on gender issues and the role played by women in Zimbabwe.
She urged the House to declare women’s day a public holiday because women have played a great role in the liberation and the economy of the country at both household and community level.
