Opposition Movement for Democratic Change Alliance (MDC-A) Chiredzi Ward 18 Councilor, Gilbert Mutubuki has been released on RTGS$5 000 bail.

Mutubuki was represented by Martin Mureri of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).

Mutubuki was arrested on Monday for allegedly participating in a gathering with intention to promote public violence.

“We have ended the detention of Chiredzi Ward 18 Councillor Gilbert Mutubuki by convincing Magistrate Madondo to release him on RTGS$5 000 bail,” said ZLHR.

“As part of his bail conditions Councillor Mutubuki has been ordered to report at Triangle Police Station once every week.”

Mutubuki has been released barely a week after a pro-democracy campaigner Makomborero Haruzivishe was convicted and sentenced to 14 months effective of the same charge by a Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga.

The former Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) president is well-known for mobilising over 2,000 signatures of students from all the country’s universities to back his High Court challenge against the UZ when he took the institution to court for awarding the former first lady grace Mugabe with a PHD

Mugabe is the chancellor of all Zimbabwe government run universities including the UZ and he capped his wife in August.

But the awarding of the degree was seen as a corrupt means of buttressing his wife’s credentials as she seeks political office – and possibly the presidency when her husband dies.

ZINASU then said it was not fighting the person of the former First Lady but protecting the credibility of the country’s education system.

“We have nothing against the First Lady but what we want is to protect the reputation of our education system so that we will not be underrated by the world in terms of our education,” he said then
