Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi faces contempt of court charges and the lawyers have drafted a complaint to the Registrar of High Court, Judge President George Chiweshe, and all cited judges following Ziyambi’s weekend outburst.
The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum said Ziyambi must show cause why the High Court must not hold him to be in contempt of court.
“We request that you place this letter before the Judge President as well as the honourable Judges who heard the matter,” the letter said.
“Our Client asserts his right to be heard in the proceedings to be commenced by the citation for contempt of court. We draw your attention to the judgement in re: Chinamasa 2000 (2) ZLR 322 (SC) which deals with the procedure that must be followed in a matter of this nature,” added the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum.
Commenting on this incident Zimbabwe’s exiled former Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo posted on his Twitter handle that Ziyambi’s statement is, “Sophomoric, juvenile and manifestly in contempt of court”.
In his emotional outburst a statement, Ziyambi wrote “we are further alarmed that these proceedings went on through the night up to midnight this is a typical case of night court consisting of night judges and night lawyers”.
“We believe that the statement scandalized the court and that accordingly, Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi is in contempt of court,” said the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum.
