Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono Criminal Prosecution Quashed

Hopewell Chin’ono

#ZLHRBREAKINGNEWS: ZLHR lawyer Harrison Nkomo has ended the persecution of freelance journalist Hopewell Chin’ono after obtaining a court order granted by High Court Judge Justice Jester Charewa in which she quashed criminal proceedings against the anti-corruption campaigner on charges of communicating or publishing falsehoods.

Justice Charewa set aside Harare Magistrate Lazini Ncube’s decision to place Chin’ono on remand and declared that section 31 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act that is publishing or communicating falsehoods prejudicial to the State is no longer part of Zimbabwean law.

Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono posted

On 8 January I was arrested for falsehoods and accused of something I NEVER did.

I was charged using a law that doesn’t exist as part of Mnangagwa’s continued political persecution of myself!

I spent 20 days in prison for that!!!

High Court judge Justice Charehwa has stopped that case.

The judge ruled that the law used to charge me is no longer part of our constitution!

The criminal proceedings in the magistrates court for this case have been quashed!

I would like to thank my lawyer Harrison Nkomo and his team for representing me, and for exposing my continued political persecution by Mnangagwa and his regime!

I would also want to thank ZLHR for paying my legal fees, thank you🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

Register to vote to end this political persecution and abuse of State institutions!
