
This year’s combined Easter/Independence Day holidays accident left 73 people dead – 38 from a single accident Zimbabwe Republic Police said in a statement Wednesday
ZRP said the number of accidents that occurred this year were far lower than those recorded last year, the number of deaths this year were actually triple those of last year.
Out of 264 road traffic accidents that were recorded between 15 and 18 April this year, 73 people died.
This was different from last year in which 401 accidents occurred with 24 deaths in total.
The number of those injured was 202 this year while 117 injuries were recorded last year.
In a Wednesday statement, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the Luwanga bus accident involving mostly members of the Zion Christian Church who were travelling for their Easter retreat contributed to the surge in the number of deaths.
“Another accident that occurred at the 40km peg along Makuti-Kariba Rd involving a Nissa UD truck accident claimed five lives while the accident at the 38km peg along Nyanga-Rwenya Rd involving a Nissan Caravan vehicle accident claimed four lives.
Two people died when a Stallion Bus had a side swipe with a haulage truck at the 180-km peg along Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Rd.
“Other deaths occurred in various road traffic accidents throughout the country,” police said.
In other News the police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 40km peg along Makuti-Kariba Rd, on 18/04/22 at 2145 hours where four people died while 32 others were injured after a ZEDTC Nissan UD70 truck in which they were travelling in, went off the road and crashed.
The names of victims will be announced in due course.
