2 Serving Zimbabwe Defence Forces Officers Arrested for Armed Robbery

This memorandum serves to place on record circumstances and initial investigations surrounding the above subject.

Circumstances
On 30 March 2022 Detectives from CID homicide Harare received information to the effect that the accused persons wanted to commit an armed robbery at number 20 Gelcon Avenue, Greendale, Harare. The detectives teamed up with ZRP Canine details and reacted to the information.

 

 

 

The team proceeded to Greendale area on surveillance and spotted the accused persons who were driving a dark blue VW Golf 6 on South African registration numbers FJ03FMGP and a navy blue Toyota Corolla on registration numbers AEC 7253.

 

 

 

Seven of the accused persons disembarked from the getaway motor vehicles and proceeded along Gelcon avenue towards house number 20 Gelcon avenue.

 

 

As the accused persons approached house number 20 Gelcon Avenue, the dogs started barking and the accused persons retreated back to their getaway motor vehicles.

The accused persons then drove towards the CBD whilst the team kept following them on surveillance.

 

 

Upon entering the CBD, the accused persons proceeded and parked at Glow petroleum Show grounds along Bulawayo road.

 

 

 

The team approached the accused persons and introduced themselves as police officers. Upon noticing the presence of the detectives, the accused persons started firing towards the team. The team retained fire and a shootout ensued.

 

 

During the shootout, two of the accused persons managed to escape from the scene in their VW Golf getaway motor vehicle. The team managed to arrest accused 1 to 5 and recovered the Toyota Corolla getaway motor vehicle. The team recovered 1x 9mm NP 20 Para Norinco pistol serial numbers 9600399 loaded with a magazine of 4 rounds and a .38 Rossi revolver serial number AAO24242 loaded with two live rounds and three spent cartridges.

 

 

 

Accused (2), (4) and (5) were seriously injured during the shootout and were rushed to Parirenyatwa hospital where accused (5) was pronounced dead on arrival.

 

 

INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT REVEALED THAT:

 

One of the accused persons who escaped in a VW Golf 6 is a South African national only known as Sean and the other one is a Zimbabwean national from Bulawayo only known as Fundisani.
Accused (1) is a serving member of the Zimbabwe National Army stationed at 9 Signals Bulawayo.
Accused (2) is a serving member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police currently stationed at ZRP Pumula and was once arrested by CID Homicide Bulawayo in connection with Armed Robbery cases.
Accused (3) is a Zimbabwean national based in South Africa.

 

 

Accused(4) is a wanted person for a case of cash in transit Armed Robbery involving Fawcett Security company which occurred along Bulawayo road near Connemara prison sometime in December 2021.
The accused persons were interviewed in connection with their visit to Harare and they indicated that they wanted to commit an Armed Robbery at house number 20 Gelcon Avenue Greendale, Harare.

 

 

OUTSTANDING

 

 

To arrest the outstanding accused persons
To take the recovered firearms to CID Forensic ballistics
To check the origin of the recovered firearms through Central Firearms registry.
To record fingerprints from the deceased and establish his real names through National Fingerprints Bureau.
To check the origin of the recovered motor vehicle.

 

 

Investigations are in progress under ZRP Harare Central I.R 031809.
